The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival 2020 Special Edition

The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival 2020 Special Edition

There's no way around it: COVID-19 is a party pooper! Even with all the limitations in place right now, the 2020 edition of Portugal Rugby Youth Festival is going forward, although in a different format. In fact, with all the enthusiasm, joy, high-level competition and excellence we're putting into it, we're calling this the PRYF 2020 Special Edition! The event takes place on October 17, 2020.

A different Festival for a very different time

No virus is going to stop the indomitable spirit of rugby! Maybe we can't have an international tournament like we did the previous years, with more than 3000 young players from 100+ teams from across the globe, but that isn't going to stop us from celebrating this game we're so passionate about!

As such, this year, the Portugal Rugby Youth Festival will happen anyway, but in a new format - adapted to comply with all public health and hygiene best practices -, one that is as exciting as ever. Read on!

Social Media International Rugby Challenge

Portuguese and international teams will receive a Portugal Rugby Youth Festival Kit that includes an official tournament ball. The challenge consists of producing a video showing each team's best skills. All submitted videos will be subject to the online appreciation of all PRYF fans. The winning team will get official PRYF 2020 Special Edition t-shirts.

Tag Rugby mini-tournament

Tag Rugby is a rugby variant where there is no physical contact between players.

PRYF 2020 Special Edtion will feature a Tag Rugby demo match between same-team players in the U16 age category. Each team will consist of 10 field players and five substitutes. The game will be 40 minutes long (two 20 minutes periods).

International Digital Talks: Portugal Rugby Youth Festival Stories

Stories told first hand by players, coaches and referees who participated in previous editions of the tournament.

Portugal Rugby Challenge

Portugal Rugby Challenge is a competition between Lisbon-based teams, who will delight us all with a showcase of all their best technical and physical skills in a challenge-filled circuit. Agility, speed, passing and kicking accuracy, and touchdown ability are among the rigorous tests the teams will be subject to at the iconic Lisbon University Stadium, PRYF's historic home.

Safety measures protect participants' health

The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival 2020 Special Edition is being prepared in order to comply with the Portuguese health authorities guidelines and with the Portuguese Rugy Federation recommendations, thus protecting the health of all event participants.

Among the measures to be put in place are: separate entry and exit areas with hand washing/disinfection stations, along with body temperature measurement by infrareds at entrance; the presence of disinfectants dispersed throughout the facilities and of adequate stock of personal protective equipment; the display of appropriate signs with public health information, with emphasis on maintaining social distance and respiratory etiquette; mandatory use of a mask in all spaces; the creation of an isolation area for people presumed to be sick; the repeated disinfection of the ball and other game equipment.

This is, in fact, a very different Portugal Rugby Youth Festival: the pandemic COVID-19 demands that it be so. However, we hope that rugby fans will feel that this new program is just as exciting and fun as the previous ones and that everyone will join us in this global rugby celebration!
